Waste-Diverting Mall Bins
SM Supermarkets Unveils a Bin System that Distributes Waste to Partners
Kanesa D — February 25, 2026SM Supermalls has introduced the Recyclable-Disposable-Compostable (RDC) bin system across its properties. The program is designed to divert waste from landfills, cut methane emissions, and reduce environmental contamination.
A key part of the initiative is SM GUUN Environmental Company, launched in 2024 in Cebu under the #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign. Waste collected from mall bins is re-sorted and processed into industrial raw materials, alternative fuel, or compost.
Recyclables from blue bins—such as bottles, cans, and cartons—are sent to partners including San Miguel Yamamura, Asia Brewery Incorporated, PETvalue, and NS Sustainability Solutions for reprocessing into new packaging.
Non-recyclable disposables from gray bins are converted into alternative fuel used by cement companies such as DMCI, Holcim (via Geocycle), and Republic Cement to reduce coal consumption. Meanwhile, food waste from green bins is transformed into soil within 48 hours and used for landscaping and urban greening projects, with support from partners like J.Co Donuts & Coffee, BlueSkye Go Circular, Goldilocks Bakeshop, and Fat Hopes Energy.
“Through SM’s RDC bins, we are not only encouraging customers to adopt responsible waste disposal habits, but also enhancing the efficiency of our waste management systems to better serve our communities. Waste is often an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ issue, so we are committed to ensuring that our approach delivers tangible environmental benefits,” said SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability, Liza Silerio.
