Synthetic SAF Technology Partnerships
SWISS and Metafuels Partnered on Synthetic SAF Development
Adam Harrie — May 14, 2026SWISS and the Lufthansa Group partnered with Swiss startup Metafuels to develop and scale synthetic sustainable aviation fuel using the ‘aerobrew’ process, which converts green methanol produced from renewable energy, water and CO₂ into a drop-in fuel compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure. The synthetic sustainable aviation fuel partnership positions SWISS for long-term SAF procurement ahead of synthetic fuel additive quotas expected in Switzerland and the EU beginning in 2030.
Metafuels is building a demonstration plant at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland alongside a first commercial production facility in Rotterdam, with both biomethanol and e-methanol supported as feedstocks.
SWISS and Metafuels show how partnering with an early-stage synthetic fuel developer can help secure future fuel supply while accelerating the path toward industrial-scale SAF production.
