Biobased Fuel Conversions
Clariant Partners with Vertimass LLC to Reduce Engine Emissions
Debra John — March 6, 2026Clariant, a specialty chemical company focused on sustainability, has partnered with Vertimass LLC to develop cleaner fuel technologies that can help reduce engine emissions. The collaboration aims to improve the conversion of biobased alcohols, such as ethanol, into more sustainable transportation fuels.
The project will "use the Vertimass Consolidated Alcohols Deoxygenation and Oligomerization (CADO) process, which converts renewable alcohol feedstocks into hydrocarbon fuels that can be used in existing engines." This process has the potential to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while lowering overall carbon emissions.
Clariant will contribute its extensive expertise in zeolite catalysts, a type of material that helps speed up chemical reactions and improve fuel conversion efficiency. The company will support the development of specialized catalysts, provide materials for testing, and assist with scaling the technology for industrial production. By combining Vertimass’ innovative process with Clariant’s catalyst technology, the partnership aims to advance lower-carbon fuel solutions that support cleaner transportation and more sustainable energy systems.
