The Carbon Business Council has launched the Direct Storage of Biomass (DSB) Coalition to support environmentally responsible ways of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This initiative brings together organizations to improve understanding and ensure safe, effective use of biomass storage as a climate solution. Direct storage of biomass involves collecting natural materials such as wood waste, crop residues, and other plant matter that have already absorbed carbon dioxide during growth. Instead of allowing this material to decompose and release carbon back into the air, it is stored in controlled environments, such as underground sites or sealed facilities, to lock the carbon away for long periods. This approach helps reduce overall greenhouse gas levels while making use of existing agricultural and forestry systems, minimizing additional environmental impact. By preventing carbon re-release and supporting sustainable waste management, biomass storage offers a practical and scalable method for long-term carbon removal and climate change mitigation.
