BlueTerra Finishes Restoring Bird Island in Florida
Debra John — March 5, 2026BlueTerra has completed the 'Bird Island Restoration Project' in the Indian River Lagoon in Melbourne, Florida, on behalf of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Bird Island is an ecologically significant rookery that provides nesting and roosting habitat for coastal bird species including brown pelicans, herons, and egrets. Over time, shoreline erosion, vegetation loss, and declining elevation—caused by wave action, storms, and rising water levels—had reduced the island’s ability to support wildlife. The restoration project focused on strengthening the island’s ecological resilience and improving habitat conditions. Damaged oyster walls were removed and reused, while dredged fill material was applied to raise the shoreline’s elevation and reduce erosion risks.
New oyster reefs constructed from limestone boulders were installed to buffer wave energy and enhance marine habitat. In addition, large red mangrove trees were planted behind the reefs, helping stabilize the shoreline, improve biodiversity, and support long-term coastal ecosystem health.
