Low-Cost Recycled Doghouses
Cayman Islands' Introduces the Canine Shelter Support Programme
Kanesa D — March 12, 2026The Cayman Islands' Department of Agriculture has started using recycled materials to build doghouses for low-income residents under the new Canine Shelter Support Programme. The shelters are made from repurposed wooden pallets and address a larger goal to reduce animal neglect in Cayman by providing adequate housing for outdoor dogs. This comes after the Department recognized that a majoirty of its neglect calls were about animals who did not seem to have adequate housing to protect them from the elements.
“We often receive reports from lower-income communities where dogs are kept outdoors, and our goal is to support those owners by donating doghouses free of charge. The expectation, of course, is that recipients are responsible animal owners who genuinely want to improve the welfare of their animals," said Erik Bodden, senior animal welfare officer at the Department of Agriculture.
