The Colossal Foundation, a nonprofit connected to the conservation-focused biotechnology company Colossal, has announced "a five-year, $500,000 partnership with the Turner Endangered Species Fund (TESF) to help protect the Bolson tortoise (Gopherus flavomarginatus)." This species is the largest and rarest tortoise in North America, and its population has declined significantly.

The funding will support efforts to restore the Bolson tortoise to parts of its historic habitat, where it once played an important ecological role. Healthy tortoise populations improve soil quality through their burrowing activity, create shelter for other animals, and help maintain balanced desert ecosystems. By reestablishing the species, the initiative also contributes to broader environmental goals, such as restoring biodiversity and strengthening ecosystem resilience.

This partnership aims to give the Bolson tortoise a stronger chance of long-term survival while supporting the overall health of the landscapes it depends on.
