Coach Mobility Consolidates into the EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy
Debra John — February 28, 2026The 'EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy' emphasizes the integration of coach mobility as a critical component in advancing environmentally responsible, low-emission travel across Member States. During high-level discussions in Brussels, stakeholders highlighted the role of road passenger transport in reducing the carbon intensity of tourism while strengthening sector resilience and regional connectivity.
At the 'High-Level Strategic Dialogue' hosted by Apostolos Tzitzikostas, European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) underscored the importance of embedding sustainable coach transport within the Strategy’s core framework. Coach mobility offers a comparatively energy-efficient mode of group travel, contributing to lower per-passenger emissions and reduced congestion when integrated into broader multimodal systems.
Participants emphasized that coordinated mobility planning is essential to achieving climate objectives, supporting balanced regional development, and enabling accessible, lower-impact tourism flows. The forthcoming Strategy, expected in June 2026, will outline policy measures aligning tourism growth with the European Union’s long-term environmental and decarbonization goals.
