SSE Issued Its First Green Kangaroo Bonds in Australia
Adam Harrie — August 14, 2026SSE issued A$1 billion in Green Kangaroo Bonds, marking the utility’s debut in the Australian bond market. The transaction was split into two tranches, with A$600 million maturing in 2031 and A$400 million in 2036. Strong investor demand left the issuance 2.5 times oversubscribed, creating the third-largest senior Kangaroo corporate orderbook on record.
Both tranches were swapped back into Sterling, resulting in approximately £520 million of funding at a weighted average cost of 5.7% and an average life of seven years. The deal represents SSE’s 12th green bond since 2017 and brings outstanding green bonds from SSE and its subsidiaries to £5.9 billion.
The issuance expands SSE’s access to international capital while reinforcing its position as the UK’s largest corporate green bond issuer. It also reflects growing global investor appetite for financing large-scale energy transition infrastructure.
