Smart Water Metering

Smart water metering is advancing utility management by combining secure eSIM connectivity, IoT infrastructure, and large-scale data monitoring to improve how water networks are operated. Through a 14-year partnership, SABESP, Vivo, and IDEMIA Secure Transactions will connect 4.4 million smart water meters across São Paulo, enabling near real-time consumption tracking and faster leak detection. The deployment helps utilities reduce water losses, optimize distribution, and give customers greater visibility into their usage, encouraging more responsible consumption.

For utilities, this project demonstrates how secure IoT platforms can modernize essential infrastructure while lowering operational costs associated with undetected leaks and manual meter readings. The rollout also creates opportunities for technology providers, telecom operators, and municipalities to collaborate on digital public services. As water scarcity becomes a growing concern, connected metering systems are likely to become a standard investment for cities seeking greater efficiency, resilience, and long-term resource management.
