Barocal Raised $10m to Reinvent Its Solid-State Cooling Technology
Adam Harrie — May 11, 2026Barocal raised a $10 million seed round to commercialize solid-state cooling technology that transfers heat by compressing and releasing organic solid materials rather than circulating gaseous refrigerants. Early prototypes deliver performance comparable to conventional vapor-compression systems while using less energy and eliminating the risk of refrigerant leaks from gases that can warm the climate more than 1,000 times as much as an equivalent amount of CO₂.
The company is targeting commercial HVAC and large refrigeration systems first, where efficiency gains translate directly into reduced operating costs. Investors include World Fund, Breakthrough Energy Discovery, Cambridge Enterprise Ventures and IP Group.
Barocal shows how applying large-scale investment to novel cooling technologies can produce cleaner alternatives without the environmental risks associated with traditional refrigerants.
