Sugarcane-Based Spandex Fibers

Hyosung TNC Produces Bio-Based Spandex Using Sugarcane

Hyosung TNC has introduced sugarcane-based spandex fibers through a newly completed manufacturing network in Vietnam. The process transforms fermented sugarcane sugars into bio-based 1,4-butanediol (bio-BDO), a chemical used to produce elastic textiles. Unlike conventional production, this approach replaces petroleum-derived ingredients while preserving the flexibility, durability, and recovery expected from spandex.

The company's Vietnam facility currently produces 50,000 metric tons of bio-BDO annually, with plans to expand capacity to 200,000 metric tons. The material is processed into PTMG, an essential component of regen™ BIO spandex, supporting applications in sportswear, swimwear, denim, and intimate apparel.

This manufacturing approach could help fashion brands incorporate renewable materials without changing their performance expectations. Hyosung's planned $1 billion investment also strengthens its position in premium textiles while creating opportunities to supply plant-derived chemicals for automotive interiors and biodegradable plastics.
