ESCOM and the Global Energy Alliance Launch Malawi's First Grid-Scale BESS
Mursal Rahman — July 29, 2026Utility battery storage is becoming an essential part of modern electric grids as utilities seek to improve reliability while expanding renewable energy generation. ESCOM and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet have commissioned Malawi's first standalone utility-scale battery energy storage system, a 20 MW/40 MWh facility designed to stabilize the national grid, reduce diesel dependence, and unlock approximately 100 MW of existing renewable energy capacity. The project also supports digital grid management and provides ancillary services that strengthen system flexibility during periods of fluctuating demand.
For utilities and infrastructure investors, battery storage creates opportunities to improve grid performance, lower operating costs, and increase the value of renewable energy assets that might otherwise be curtailed. As more emerging markets modernize their electricity networks, large-scale battery systems are expected to become a critical component of resilient, low-carbon power infrastructure and long-term economic development.
