Collins Aerospace Completes Hybrid-Electric Powertrain Testing for Airbus
Mursal Rahman — July 22, 2026Collins Aerospace is advancing hybrid-electric aircrafts by developing high-voltage electric propulsion and energy management systems that can reduce aviation emissions. The company has completed integrated testing of hybrid-electric powertrain subsystems at The Grid facility in Rockford, Illinois, as part of the European Union's Clean Aviation SWITCH project. The systems, developed in collaboration with Airbus, Pratt & Whitney and GKN Aerospace, will now undergo aircraft-level integration testing, including battery interfacing and energy management, to support future short- and medium-range aircraft.
The project demonstrates how hybrid-electric architectures can reduce fuel consumption while improving aircraft efficiency and reliability. Integrating electric motor generators, advanced power distribution and intelligent energy management systems can help manufacturers meet increasingly stringent emissions targets without compromising aircraft performance. As testing progresses toward flight demonstrations, these technologies are expected to accelerate the commercialization of more efficient aircraft and strengthen collaboration across the global aerospace supply chain..
