Devon County is Optimizing its Bus Routes to Reduce Impact

Devon County Council and local operators are implementing a series of bus service improvements that emphasize zero emission vehicles, route upgrades, and targeted funding to expand capacity and sustainability. Portions of planned route enhancements are to be supported by Bus Service Improvement Plan funding, with specific allocations referenced for Newton Abbot and Barnstaple. The county has secured multiple funding streams and operator commitments, including a joint ZEBRA scheme investment to introduce new zero emission buses in Exeter and North Devon and a separate award to support a 41‑vehicle electric fleet rollout.

Implementation plans include staged vehicle deliveries and infrastructure works through early 2026, with operators noting both opportunities and constraints as larger electric buses enter service. Local authorities and operators expect quieter, lower emission services and improved park and ride options, while also reporting operational adjustments where vehicle dimensions affect access on narrow streets. Monitoring and route revisions are part of the deployment process as charging and depot upgrades are completed.
