Fail-Safe Residential Battery Systems
Viridi has introduced fail-safe residential battery systems that allow large-scale energy storage to operate inside occupied apartment buildings. Installed at Peace Bridge Place in Buffalo, New York, the system uses proprietary technology designed to prevent thermal runaway, a dangerous overheating process, from spreading between battery cells. This approach makes indoor electricity storage more practical while supporting reliable backup power.
The 3.75 MWh lithium-ion system serves a 105-unit affordable housing property and operates across seven battery rooms. Its intelligent energy management technology automatically adjusts electricity storage and distribution based on building requirements and grid conditions, helping reduce demand during peak periods.
The installation could create new opportunities for affordable housing operators to manage electricity expenses while improving energy reliability. Through demand-response programs, property owners may also generate additional revenue, establishing a potential model for future residential energy storage projects.
