Electric Bi-Articulated Buses
Goiânia Announced a Breakthrough Bus Rapid Transit System
Colin Smith — April 1, 2026Goiânia has introduced the first fully electric bi articulated buses to operate in a Bus Rapid Transit system, marking a significant development in large scale zero emission public transport. The rollout consists of 21 Volvo BZRT electric vehicles, including 16 articulated and 5 bi articulated units, operating within the RMTC metropolitan network. The bi articulated buses measure 28 meters in length and can accommodate up to 250 passengers, while the articulated models carry up to 180 passengers. Both configurations use two 200 kW electric motors with a combined output of 400 kW and can be equipped with up to eight battery packs providing 720 kWh of installed capacity. The vehicles began regular service in early 2026 and are designed for high capacity corridors that require efficient passenger flow.
The deployment is supported by the Eletroposto Oeste charging hub located at the METROBUS S.A. depot. The facility includes 23 chargers rated at 240 kW and can charge up to 46 buses simultaneously, enabling scheduled charging cycles for daily operations. The project was developed through collaboration among HP Mobilidade, GreenMob Capital, Suécia Veículos, Volvo Financial Services and Volvo Buses. Safety systems integrated into the fleet include camera based visibility support, blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition. The initiative positions Goiânia as an early adopter of large scale electric BRT technology and reflects broader efforts to reduce emissions and modernize urban mobility infrastructure.
