Driverless Metro Transit Systems

Ho Chi Minh City has received its first set of driverless metro trains from Hyundai Rotem as part of the development of Metro Line 1, a project intended to modernize the city’s public transportation network. According to the announcement, the trains are designed to operate without onboard drivers and incorporate automated control systems that support consistent speeds, improved braking performance, and enhanced operational safety. Each train includes three cars with capacity for several hundred passengers and features wide doors, open gangways, and accessibility accommodations to support efficient passenger flow. The introduction of these units marks a significant milestone in the city’s transition toward advanced urban rail infrastructure.

The deployment is expected to contribute to reduced congestion and improved travel times for both residents and visitors. Hyundai Rotem noted that the trains are engineered for energy efficiency, using lightweight materials and regenerative braking to lower overall power consumption. The company also highlighted that the system is designed to integrate with broader sustainability goals by offering a lower‑emission alternative to road‑based transport. As construction and testing progress, the driverless trains will form a core component of Ho Chi Minh City’s long‑term strategy to expand high‑capacity transit and support more reliable mobility across the metropolitan area.
