MetLife Stadium achieved LEED v4.1 Gold certification for Existing Buildings from the U.S. Green Building Council, becoming one of a select number of NFL venues to earn the designation under the updated framework. The certification followed a 12-month performance review tied to the stadium's preparation to host eight FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, including the Final.

Recognized initiatives included on-site solar generation, LED and motion-sensor lighting, use of hybrid and electric vehicles, food-waste diversion, and a recycling program covering aluminum, PET, cardboard and electronic waste.

As major sporting events faced growing scrutiny over their environmental footprints, MetLife Stadium's certification showed how large venues could use high-profile tournaments as a catalyst for lasting sustainability improvements rather than temporary measures.
