Churchill Downs Ran the Kentucky Derby on Renewable Energy Again

References: prnewswire

Churchill Downs and utility partners LG&E and KU have extended their green energy partnership for the fourth consecutive year. They are matching all electricity consumed during Kentucky Derby Week with renewable energy certificates from solar and wind farms in Kentucky and nearby states. This renewable energy commitment covers the entire seven days of live racing, from April 25 (Opening Day) to May 25 (the 152nd Run for the Roses).

The sustainability certificates are secured through LG&E and KU on behalf of Churchill Downs, allowing the racetrack to offset its full event energy consumption without requiring a direct connection to a specific clean energy source.

As more major sporting events face scrutiny over their environmental footprint, Churchill Downs shows how a long-term utility partnership built around renewable certificates can provide a historic venue with a sustainable pathway to cleaner operations year over year.
