Maritime Emissions Reductions

NORDEN delivered the first verified maritime emissions reductions through the RSB Book & Claim registry, completing a pilot with Microsoft and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials that extends an existing aviation framework to shipping for the first time. The mechanism allows companies to purchase verified emissions reductions tied to sustainable fuels, regardless of where those fuels are physically consumed within the industry.

NORDEN became the first maritime operator to obtain RSB Book & Claim trader certification, a prerequisite for issuing and selling the reductions. Microsoft became the first company globally to use the framework for shipping emissions as part of its broader supply chain decarbonization efforts.

This pilot signals that Book & Claim mechanisms could offer a credible, scalable path to decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors.
