Bidirectional EV Energy Systems

PG&E is expanding bidirectional EV energy systems through its Vehicle-to-Everything program, adding compatible vehicles from Kia, Volvo, Polestar and Nissan alongside new charging options. V2X technology allows participating EVs to function as mobile batteries, providing backup electricity to homes or sending stored power to the grid during periods of high demand. The expansion includes Bidirectional Energy and PowerFlex as approved partners, giving customers more options for connecting their vehicles to home and grid energy systems.

For utilities, wider V2X adoption could create a distributed network of EV batteries that supports grid reliability as electricity demand grows. Homeowners can potentially reduce energy costs while gaining backup power during outages. Financial incentives of up to $13,000 for certain eligible configurations could also lower adoption barriers, creating opportunities for automakers, charger manufacturers and energy service providers.
