CalSTRS, the world's largest educator-only pension fund, committed up to $2 billion to sustainable infrastructure credit through a strategic partnership with Nuveen's Energy Infrastructure Credit business, serving as the anchor investor for the firm's Energy & Power Infrastructure strategy. The partnership spans renewable power generation, energy storage, industrial decarbonization, energy efficiency and circular economy investments, alongside the onshoring of infrastructure supply chains to support domestic manufacturing.

The investment comes as U.S. power demand tied to AI and digitalization is projected to increase two to three times by 2035, creating what Nuveen describes as a generational need for new infrastructure financing.

CalSTRS shows how pension funds are increasingly positioning sustainable infrastructure credit as a core portfolio allocation rather than a niche impact investment.
