Ecosystem Restoration Milestones
BTG Has Restored 20,000 Hectares of Brazil's Cerrado Biome
Adam Harrie — August 15, 2026BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group and Conservation International announced that restoration is underway across more than 20,000 hectares of Brazil’s Cerrado biome. According to the Brazilian Restoration and Reforestation Observatory, the initiative represents the largest known restoration effort in the region and focuses on degraded cattle pasture within the highly biodiverse ecosystem.
The restored land is expected to create more than 80,000 hectares of connected habitat, while early results have shown the return of jaguars, wolves and tapirs. The project also includes more than 400 miles of protected stream corridors. The strategy closed with $1.24 billion in equity commitments and aims to expand to 270,000 hectares across Latin America.
The initiative combines ecosystem restoration with an investment strategy that includes high-integrity carbon removal credits generated through Verra’s VM0047 methodology, highlighting growing efforts to finance large-scale nature restoration through private capital.
