Battery Funding Rounds

Certain Energy Raised £10M for Its Long-Duration Storage Tech

U.K. long-duration energy storage startup Certain Energy raised £10 million in Series A funding, led by the British Business Bank and supported by Centrica, Ceres Power and Temasek Trust's Catalytic Capital for Climate and Health, to commercialize its manganese flow battery technology. The investment will support the development of a grid-connected MWh-class system in India, the expansion of the company's U.K. research facility and the building of the supply chain needed for replicable deployment.

The patented electrolyte is designed for a 20-year operating life with minimal degradation and has the potential to reduce marginal storage costs to roughly one-tenth of those for comparable vanadium flow batteries.

Certain Energy's technology signals how long-duration storage built on abundant, low-cost materials could become essential infrastructure for stabilizing increasingly renewables-heavy grids.
