Iron-Air Storage Deals
Ore Energy Has Signed a 1 GWh Deal With Budget Thuis
Adam Harrie — August 7, 2026Ore Energy signed an agreement with Budget Thuis to deploy 1 GWh of iron-air long-duration storage, marking the largest iron-air energy storage offtake in continental Europe and the first such deal with a European energy supplier. The deal begins with a committed 400 MWh first phase, planned for delivery in 2028, using Ore Energy's containerized battery architecture, which is configurable for durations ranging from 24 to 100 hours.
Unlike short-duration batteries that shift solar power by a few hours, iron-air technology stores renewable electricity across multi-day gaps in wind generation, reducing reliance on gas-fired backup when clean power is scarce.
As European grids increasingly curtail wind power due to inadequate storage, this agreement signals that iron-air technology could become as essential for wind as lithium-ion batteries have been for solar, helping utilities deliver cleaner, more predictable electricity year-round.
