Avangrid Plans to Build Shutler Energy Storage in Oregon
Adam Harrie — June 26, 2026Avangrid announced plans to build Shutler Energy Storage, a 41MW/82MWh battery storage project in Gilliam County, Oregon, designed to strengthen reliability across the company's 3GW Pacific Northwest portfolio. The facility can discharge 41MW for two hours, enough to power approximately 3,000 U.S. homes in a single discharge, and is expected to create roughly 35 local union construction jobs.
Alongside the project, Avangrid will donate $110,000 annually for the life of the facility to the Condon Early Learning Center and Arlington Childcare Center to help address childcare access barriers identified by county leadership. Shutler Energy Storage will support Avangrid's independent Balancing Authority, helping the company integrate regional generation assets and respond more quickly to changing grid conditions. Operations are expected to begin in 2027.
Avangrid shows how energy infrastructure investments can pair grid reliability with long-term community benefits that extend beyond electricity generation.
