Electric regional aviation is advancing cleaner air transportation as Project SEAN prepares to launch electric aircraft demonstration flights across Scotland's Highlands and Islands in 2027. Supported by £1.5 million from the UK Department for Transport, the initiative will use BETA Technologies' ALIA CTOL (CX300) aircraft to test passenger, cargo and medical service routes. Operating from Inverness Airport, the project will evaluate aircraft performance, charging infrastructure and airport readiness to support future electric flight operations in remote communities.

The demonstrations highlight how battery-electric aircraft can reduce aviation emissions while improving regional connectivity in areas where alternative transportation options are limited. Gathering operational data from real-world flights will help accelerate commercial deployment and inform future infrastructure investments. For aviation operators, airports and technology providers, the project creates opportunities to develop scalable electric flight networks that lower operating emissions while supporting more resilient and sustainable regional transportation systems.
