Polyphase Wireless EV Chargers
Polyphase wireless EV chargers are being evaluated through a technology program involving HEVO, BMW, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). HEVO is contributing engineering expertise and circular coil topologies to support BMW’s bench testing of compatibility with ORNL’s proprietary polyphase coil technology. The architecture is being explored for its potential to improve wireless charging power density, efficiency, and packaging for future electric and autonomous vehicles.
Unlike connected charging systems focused primarily on coordinating vehicles and charging stations, this work examines the underlying hardware used to transfer power wirelessly. Successful development could enable more compact and capable charging systems while reducing manual charging requirements for automated vehicles. For HEVO, participating alongside an automaker and national laboratory provides an opportunity to apply its commercial experience to emerging charging architectures. The evaluation could also support future applications across passenger vehicles, autonomous fleets, and automated depot operations.
