Google, MN8 Energy and Eos Energy Enterprises are developing the Google Mammoth Solar Storage project, a multi-technology clean energy facility in West Virginia that combines 86 MW of solar generation with 380 MWh of battery storage to power Google's regional data center operations. The site is located on a reclaimed coal mine in Kanawha County and pairs lithium-ion batteries with a 10-hour zinc-based long-duration storage system from Eos.
The project marks West Virginia's first commercial-scale deployment of long-duration energy storage, designed to extend renewable generation beyond the hours solar alone can provide. This project signals how pairing short- and long-duration storage technologies could become a standard approach for meeting rising digital infrastructure demand.
MN8 estimates up to $350 million in investment, 200 construction jobs and roughly $4 million in local property tax revenue over 20 years.
