Biomass Carbon Removal Systems

Cowboy clean fuels is expanding carbon removal through a biomass-based system that combines permanent CO2 storage with renewable natural gas production. The Wyoming-based company injects agricultural processing residues into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs, where microorganisms digest the biomass to generate RNG while CO2 is absorbed onto coal surfaces. The company states that its BiCRS+RNG methodology provides more than 100 years of carbon storage. The approach makes use of existing energy infrastructure in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin rather than requiring entirely new storage assets. Cowboy Clean Fuels has now completed its first carbon removal credit sale through a Salesforce-backed purchase facilitated by Milkywire, with delivery scheduled for 2026. By generating both carbon removal credits and renewable gas from the same operations, the model creates multiple potential revenue streams. It could also help carbon removal buyers access verified credits while supporting continued use of existing regional infrastructure and skilled energy workers.
