Compact Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Ballard Introduces Efficient Fuel Cell Engines for Solaris Buses

Ballard Power Systems is introducing compact hydrogen fuel cells into series production through its FCmove-SC engine, designed for the next-generation Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen bus. The engine combines higher power output per unit of space with simplified components, helping manufacturers integrate hydrogen technology while improving servicing and operational efficiency.

The FCmove-SC delivers up to 80 kW of power and achieves 57% peak efficiency. Its design increases volumetric power density by 57% while reducing the total number of parts by 40%. Improved thermal management also allows excess heat to support cabin heating, while remote diagnostics help identify maintenance requirements.

For public transit operators, these improvements could lower servicing expenses, minimize unexpected downtime, and extend vehicle value. Ballard's Fleet360° support services further assist with performance monitoring and maintenance planning, strengthening the commercial appeal of hydrogen-powered buses for transportation networks
