Hydrogen Truck Conversion Kits
LNK Energies, an MIT startup, developed a way to convert existing heavy-duty diesel trucks to run on hydrogen carried in a liquid fuel. It shrank the reactor that releases the hydrogen to about the size of a mini fridge, small enough to fit on a truck.
Because the hydrogen is released on board, trucks avoid compressing it above 11,000 psi, and the liquid fuel can flow through ordinary diesel pumps. Hydrogen can burn in a lightly modified diesel engine or feed fuel cells, and LNK says a Class 8 truck costs 13% less to own than a diesel truck.
As diesel prices hit record highs, LNK signals that retrofitting trucks to use existing fuel stations could help long-haul fleets transition to hydrogen without waiting for new refueling networks or costly onboard pressure tanks.
