Hydrogen-Powered Passenger Trains
Ballard Power Systems is expanding hydrogen-powered passenger trains through a 4.8 MW fuel cell order from Siemens Mobility. The agreement covers 24 FCrail 200 kW modules that will power 12 Mireo Plus H trains for Romania’s Railway Reform Authority, creating the country’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train fleet.
Designed for non-electrified rail routes, the fuel cell trains offer an alternative to diesel engines while providing long-range operation and fast refueling. Deliveries are scheduled for 2027 and 2028, with passenger service expected to begin in 2029. The project also represents the Mireo Plus H platform’s largest commercial deployment and its first outside Germany.
For Ballard, the order strengthens its long-term relationship with Siemens Mobility and expands its presence in European rail. For Siemens, bringing the platform into Eastern Europe could create further opportunities as rail operators seek alternatives to diesel without installing full-route electrification.
