Risk-Sharing Energy Financing

EIB and BNP Paribas Target €2.8 Billion in Grid Investment

The European Investment Bank and BNP Paribas signed an agreement to support European energy grids. The EIB will provide up to €350 million in counter-guarantees, which BNP Paribas will match, to build a portfolio of bank guarantees worth up to €700 million. The resulting leverage is expected to stimulate up to €2.8 billion in investment across the real economy.

The risk-sharing operation aims to expand BNP Paribas' capacity to support European manufacturers of electricity grid components as demand accelerates with the energy transition. It is part of the EIB's broader €1.5 billion Pan-EU Power Grid package, building on the bank's earlier €6.5 billion commitment to wind energy and a separate €1 billion wind guarantee partnership with BNP Paribas, signed in 2025.

As Europe works to modernize aging grid infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand, this agreement signals that targeted risk-sharing mechanisms can multiply public investment, generating significantly larger private capital flows for the equipment manufacturers building out the continent's energy backbone.
