Rancher-Led Grassland Funds
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced a $9 million Walmart Foundation grant to launch the Great Plains Grassland Fund, a public–private grant fund that will protect and sustainably manage intact grasslands across the U.S. Great Plains. McDonald's USA and its suppliers are adding $9 million in aligned investment through the Grassland Resilience and Conservation Initiative.
The fund aims to permanently protect 150,000 to 200,000 acres of high-value grasslands at risk of conversion, using tools such as conservation easements, while helping ranchers improve regenerative management on another 150,000 to 200,000 acres. Roughly 2 million acres of Great Plains grassland are converted to cropland each year, and only half remain intact.
As conservation funding shifts toward pooled models, this signals how retailers can support rancher-led land protection that sustains ranching.
