Ameresco Sunel Broke Ground on Its 58 MWp Romania Solar Plant

Ameresco Sunel Energy announced a 58 MWp solar photovoltaic facility in Iratosu, Romania, advancing Romania's solar energy transition through a partnership with SUNEL Group and project owner TDI Renewables. Ameresco Sunel will handle engineering, procurement, construction, and long-term operations for the ground-mounted facility, which includes a substation and underground cabling to integrate the new capacity into Romania's grid.
The project is expected to offset approximately 53,920 metric tons of CO₂ annually, strengthen domestic renewable generation capacity, and enhance regional energy security. It builds on Ameresco Sunel's existing Romanian portfolio, including a previously announced 466 MWp set of solar parks, together supporting the country's commitment to phasing out coal-fired power by 2032.
This project signals that utility-scale solar development is becoming central to both national energy security and Europe's broader net-zero commitments.
