Data Center Fuel Cells
American Electric Power plans to invest about $4 billion in the Cheyenne Fuel Cell project in Wyoming, which will supply Google under a 20-year power purchase agreement. AEP owns about 92% of the facility, which will use fuel cell technology from Bloom Energy designed for rapid deployment and reliable, on-demand power.
The project aims to support Google's growing energy needs in the greater Cheyenne area. AEP plans to begin construction this year and expects the facility to be fully operational by the end of 2028.
As large power users seek firm capacity quickly, this project signals how utilities are pairing long-term contracts with modular fuel cell technology, giving data center operators a faster route to dedicated electricity without waiting on traditional grid buildout.
