Nuclear Upgrade Power Agreements
Google signed a $4.3 billion, 20-year power purchase agreement to bring 890 MW of nuclear energy online by upgrading six existing Constellation Energy nuclear plants in Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The upgrades include modernized turbines, steam generators and digital control systems.
The agreement provides Constellation with the revenue certainty needed to invest in updates to 11 of its reactors while keeping customers from absorbing added costs tied to the AI boom. Constellation will also use Google's Gemini Enterprise software for site selection, outage management and infrastructure protection. The companies also agreed to a separate 15-year supply deal covering another 2.7 GW.
As AI demand strains power supplies, Google's deal signals that tech companies are funding upgrades to existing reactors, adding carbon-free capacity faster than building new plants.
