Plug-In Solar Legislations

California Signs the Plug and Play Solar Act Into Law

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 868, the Plug and Play Solar Act, which removes regulatory barriers to small, portable plug-in solar systems and establishes new safety requirements for their use. Authored by State Senator Scott Wiener, the law creates a pathway for Californians to generate their own electricity and gain more control over household energy costs without the cost and complexity of a traditional rooftop installation.

Nonprofit Bright Saver, which works to accelerate plug-in solar adoption nationwide, called the signing a significant milestone, noting that California joins a growing number of states advancing similar legislation. The organization will join Senator Wiener and other advocates at a San Francisco press conference celebrating the law and SB 222, which streamlines residential heat pump installations.

As states seek lower-barrier entry points into clean energy ownership, California's move signals that plug-in solar could become a model other states follow to expand access to renewable energy nationwide.
