500MW Solar PV Projects
Oman's Naqaa to Develop a solar Project in Northern Botswana
Colin Smith — April 16, 2026Oman based Naqaa Sustainable Energy has been identified as the lead developer for a 500MW solar PV project planned near Maun in northern Botswana. According to reports citing Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy, the company will design, finance, build and operate what is expected to become the country’s largest solar installation. The project is anticipated to include an integrated battery energy storage component and forms part of a broader cooperation agreement between Oman and Botswana to develop up to 3GW of solar, wind and storage capacity.
Naqaa operates under O‑Green, a clean energy platform backed by Oman’s sovereign wealth fund and established to advance renewable energy projects across Oman, the Gulf and Africa. The Botswana initiative aligns with O‑Green’s mandate to deliver gigawatt scale renewable portfolios and follows recent government level engagements between the two countries. Botswana continues to expand its renewable energy sector, with additional large scale solar developments underway, including projects led by international partners such as Scatec and other regional consortia.
