Rock-Based Carbon Removal Deals

Frontier Commits $11.7 Million to 44.01's CO₂-to-Rock Storage

Frontier, the corporate carbon removal buyers' group, brokered $11.7 million in purchase deals with 44.01, a startup that turns CO₂ into rock, covering roughly 21,000 tons of removal between 2028 and 2031. It is Frontier's first purchase using this method.

44.01 dissolves captured CO₂ in water and injects it into peridotite, an abundant rock where it reacts with magnesium silicate minerals and locks into stable carbonates. The startup plans to draw CO₂ from a wastewater treatment plant and store it in rock formations on the United Arab Emirates' east coast, with Frontier saying such formations could hold over 5 billion tons annually.

As corporate buyers back early offtakes, this deal signals how small purchases can prove in-situ mineralization at pilot scale and open new permanent storage locations where conventional underground storage is impractical.
