Space Solar Energy Agreements

Meta and Overview Energy Has Partnered on Its Space Solar Power Deal

Meta has signed a capacity reservation agreement with Overview Energy for up to 1 GW of space solar energy, marking one of the first commercial deals in the sector. Overview's satellites collect uninterrupted sunlight in geosynchronous orbit and send it to ground-based solar facilities as low-intensity near-infrared light, thereby extending the number of hours those facilities can generate electricity.

An orbital demonstration is scheduled for 2028, with commercial power delivery targeted for 2030. The deal gives Meta early access to capacity as it works to secure reliable, round-the-clock clean energy for its ever-expanding AI infrastructure footprint.

As AI data centers push Earth's electricity demand to new highs, Meta and Overview Energy show how solar power from orbit could address the fundamental issues that stop standard renewable energy from being a fully dependable energy source.
