CIP Combines Wind Power with Grid-Forming Battery Storage

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is advancing hybrid wind energy systems with Gawara Baya, a large-scale energy project planned for North Queensland, Australia. The development combines a 408 MW onshore wind farm featuring 68 turbines with a 104 MW grid-forming battery energy storage system. This integrated approach pairs renewable generation with battery capacity designed to support a more reliable electricity supply while providing power for up to 240,000 Australian homes.

Following its acquisition of the project, CIP reached financial close with an AUD 1.7 billion facility secured through 10 banks, with full operations expected in 2030. From a business perspective, long-term offtake agreements with Stanwell and SmartestEnergy, alongside participation in Australia's Capacity Investment Scheme, provide greater revenue certainty. The project demonstrates how combining renewable generation and storage can create investable infrastructure while supporting regional employment, procurement, and energy capacity.
