Green Hydrogen Refinery Projects
Iberdrola and bp Built Spain's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant
Adam Harrie — June 27, 2026Iberdrola España and bp completed construction of a 25MW green hydrogen plant at the Castellón refinery, with the facility now entering commissioning tests ahead of production expected later this year. Built through the Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L. joint venture, the plant is set to become Spain's largest operational green hydrogen facility by 2026.
The project received up to €211 million in reallocated IPCEI Hy2USE funding approved by Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition, aligning with the EU's ACCELERATE EU emergency package to strengthen energy independence. The hydrogen produced will replace natural gas in industrial processes and could also support decarbonization in hard-to-abate sectors such as ceramics and chemicals, with additional backing from NextGenerationEU funds.
The project shows how green hydrogen is advancing from demonstration projects to commercial-scale industrial infrastructure capable of reducing emissions in energy-intensive sectors.
