Floating Reservoir Solar Arrays

Floating reservoir solar arrays are creating new opportunities for municipalities to generate renewable electricity without consuming additional land. D3Energy has energized a 6-MW floating solar system on Monroeville, Ohio's reservoir, making it the largest floating solar installation in the state and one of the five largest in the United States. The system consists of 9,222 solar modules positioned across three floating islands covering 12 acres.

By placing panels on an existing municipal reservoir, Monroeville can expand its solar capacity while preserving surrounding land for other uses, including agriculture. The array feeds electricity into the village's distribution grid and complements an existing 4-MW ground-mounted solar project. For municipalities and utilities, floating solar offers another way to use existing infrastructure for power generation where available land is limited or contested. D3Energy's growing Ohio portfolio also demonstrates the commercial potential for developing floating solar across publicly owned reservoirs.
