Agricultural Waste Biomethane Platforms
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has reached a final investment decision on the Via Verde biomethane platform based in Italy through its Advanced Bioenergy Fund II, marking the fund's first investment and CIP's entry into the Italian biomethane sector. The platform itself will convert agricultural waste into domestic biomethane, replacing imported fossil gas.
Via Verede developed 20 pipelines across multiple regions of Italy, including Lombardy, Abruzzo, and Campania, with each project expected to process between 60,00 to 100,000 tonnes of agricultural waste annually. Once fully operational, the platform will deliver about 1 TWh of biomethane a year, enough to supply around 60,000 Italian households.
As Italy continues to scale towards its 2030 biomethane targets, Via Verde signals how waste-to-gas platforms could give investors a repeatable path to building domestic renewable gas supply.
