CO2 Storage Facilities

Greensand became the European Union's first full-scale facility for permanent carbon storage, opening at the Port of Esbjerg in a ceremony led by King Frederik X of Denmark. The project, led by INEOS Energy alongside Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden, sources CO2 primarily from Danish biomethane plants, liquefies it and ships it aboard the EU's first purpose-built CO2 carrier for injection into the Nini West reservoir, roughly 1,800 meters beneath the seabed offshore. In its first commercial phase, Greensand can store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, with capacity designed to expand to 4–8 million tonnes as demand grows. The project arrives as the EU works toward capturing and storing 50 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030, a target the bloc remains far from reaching at current infrastructure levels.
