Vehicle-to-Home EV Chargers
Ford announced the Home Power Station and Home Backup Power, two bidirectional chargers that let its forthcoming Fathom pickup, which starts at $28,350, send more than 10 kW to a home or the grid. Both undercut Ford's first-generation equipment by 50% to 60%.
The $650 Home Power Station charges the truck when electricity is cheap and sends power back to the home when prices rise, while the $2,100 Home Backup Power package adds a panel to run parts or all of a house during an outage. Installation is extra, and enrolling the Fathom in a virtual power plant can pay upward of $1,000 a year.
As data centers strain the grid, Ford's chargers signal how lower-cost bidirectional equipment could turn pickups into home backup power and grid storage.
